Computational Neuroscience Ph.D. Studentships at the ISRC, University of Ulster

The Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC) at the University of Ulster, UK, invites applications for 3-year Ph.D. studentships. The application process for the Ph.D. studentship is opened with a closing date for applications on the 28th February 2014. The Computational Neuroscience Research Team (CNRT) at ISRC focuses on both fundamental brain and behavioural sciences, and their applications, including clinical neuroscience (http://isrc.ulster.ac.uk/computational-neuroscience-research-team/computational-neuroscience-research-team.html ). A functional brain mapping facility has recently been established at the ISRC. The available Ph.D. projects for 2014 under the CNRT are:

1.      Astrocyte: A New Player in Brain Computation

2.      BITTS: A New Generation of Brain Like Supercomputers.

Supervisors: Liam McDaid, Jim Harkin, Liam Maguire



3.      BrainWave: A Radically New Learning Paradigm for Neural Networks

Supervisors: Liam McDaid, Jim Harkin

Collaboration: Alfonso Araque, University of Minnesota, USA



4.      Computational Modelling of Electrical Brain Stimulation for Effective Treatment in Neuropsychiatric Disorder.

Supervisors: KongFatt Wong-Lin, Girijesh Prasad

Collaboration: Prof. Declan McLoughlin, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland



5.      Computational Neuromodulation: Neural Circuit Modelling.

Supervisors: KongFatt Wong-Lin, John J. Wade, Ammar Belatreche

Collaboration: Prof. Kae Nakamura, Kansai Medical University, Japan



6.      Computational Neuropsychiatry: Modelling the Biology of Depression.

Supervisors: KongFatt Wong-Lin, T. Martin McGinnity


7.      Investigating Alzheimer's Disease using Large Scale Models of Mammalian Thalamocortical Networks.
Supervisors: Liam Maguire, Damien Coyle

All studentships, which are highly competitive, are expected to start in September 2014, and include tuition fees and an annual maintenance allowance for EU and non-EU students. All applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in an appropriate subject, such as in computer science, electronics, physics, mathematics or neuroscience. Applicants must be highly motivated and willing to pursue research and develop skills across the disciplines. Unless indicated, successful students will be based primarily at the ISRC with opportunities to interact with other related ISRC research teams (e.g. Bio-Inspired and Neuro-Engineering, Brain-Computer Interfacing and Assistive Technologies, and Cognitive Robotics), research groups from the (5* research rating) Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, the recent Centre for Stratified Medicine, and also opportunities for spin-outs. The ISRC is situated in the city of Derry~Londonderry, which has received the City of Culture 2013 award.
