A post-doctoral position in the field of event-driven, asynchronous, neuromorphic sensors is available at the Robotics Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in the Neuromorphic Systems and Interfaces group led Dr. Chiara Bartolozzi.
Research theme:
The "neuromorphic" engineering approach takes inspiration from biology to design hardware computing devices that are fundamentally different from current technology. This strategy has particular relevance for applications where biological systems outperform classical digital computers, such as the task of perception, where the system must process noisy and ambiguous stimuli to produce appropriate behavioral responses. The efficient and compact devices developed through this approach are especially suited for integration into autonomous artificial systems; an example is the design of smart sensors for robotic platforms.
The theme proposed for the available position is the development of event-driven neuromorphic vision sensors for the humanoid robot iCub (www.icub.org<http://www.icub.org>). Specifically, the activity will start from the optimization of existing prototypes and evaluation of their implementation on different technologies, to end up with the design of a high resolution space-variant sensor that will be integrated on the robot.
The successful candidate holds a degree in physics, electronic or biomedical engineering or similar and a background in neuroscience.
Location: The IIT is located in Genova, Italy, a charming seaside Mediterranean city right in the middle of the beautiful Italian Riviera, with a vibrant cultural life and with a much more affordable cost of living than many other European cities.
The contract has a duration of 2 years. The working language of the institute is English. The IIT is an Equal Opportunity Employer that actively seeks diversity in the workforce.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and detailed Curriculum Vitae to Chiara Bartolozzi (chiara.bartolozzi at iit.it<mailto:chiara.bartolozzi at iit.it>).
In order to comply with the Italian law (art. 23 of Privacy Law of the Italian Legislative Decree n. 196/03), we have to kindly ask the candidate to give his/her consent to allow IIT to process his/her personal data.
We inform you that the information you provided will be used solely for the purpose of assessing your professional profile to meet the requirements of IIT. Your data will be processed by IIT, with headquarters in Genoa, Via Morego, 30, acting as the Data Holder, using computer and paper based means, observing the rules on protection of personal data, including those relating to the security of data. Please also note that, pursuant to art. 7 of Legislative Decree 196/2003, you may exercise your rights at any time as a party concerned by contacting the Data Manager.
