PhD Research Studentship at the University of Plymouth, UK
"Mathematical and computational models of Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)"
The goal of this exciting project is to investigate the challenging problem of Parkinson's disease and DBS from a computational neuroscience point of view. A set of new mathematical and computational models will be developed and used to study neural dynamics in simplified cases and to rectify ideas and principles related to the theoretical basis of DBS. Biologically-plausible large-scale computational models will be used to simulate neural activities of brain structures involved in locomotion control. Using these models we will study the neuronal mechanisms of the de-synchronization of pathological rhythmic activity, scenarios for 'resetting' pathological rhythms and stabilizing normal activity. This part of the project will be grounded in recordings of electrical activity from PD patients. Modern methods for analysing biomedical signals will be used to extract key features of electrical activity and to identify model parameters.
The ideal candidate will have a background in computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering, physics or a related field, ideally with knowledge of Computational Neuroscience, and interested in both theory and medical applications. Good programming skills and good knowledge of mathematics are mandatory.
The studentship will have 3 year duration and will cover full-time Home/EU tuition fees plus a stipend of £13,590 per annum. The position is open to all applicants, although candidates required to pay overseas fees must be able to cover the difference between Home/EU and overseas tuition fees (approximately £9,250 per annum).
For further information on the project or for an informal discussion, please contact Professor Roman Borisyuk at r.borisyuk at plymouth.ac.uk<mailto:r.borisyuk at plymouth.ac.uk>.
