The Kirchhoff Institute for Physics in Heidelberg (Germany) has an open
PhD position and several Diploma/Master student positions in the
EU-funded BrainScaleS project. BrainScaleS is an international
consortium working on the understanding of the computational principles
of information processing in the brain and their transfer to novel
computing architectures. The Heidelberg group builds a large scale
neuromorphic system based on VLSI microelectronics implemented on
silicon wafers.
Short thesis description:
Starting with an existing software model of a neuromorphic wafer-scale
system, new components have to be implemented and verified in terms of
feasibility and usefulness for the real system. The successful candidate
will gain insight into neuromorphic hardware modeling at different
scales, from a system level down to individual circuits. The project
also involves working with state-of-the-art neural network models of
project partners in the BrainScaleS project, being an essential
intermediary for porting these models onto a large-scale neuromorphic
substrate.
To make this possible, the student will take an active part in
developing novel hardware and software concepts and giving indispensable
feedback to both hardware designers, regarding the operation workflow
needed for the system, and neural network modelers, who need to exploit
the features of accelerated large scale neuromorphic hardware systems.
