We are seeking highly motivated candidates for a PhD position (3 years) at
the Neuroengineering and Bio-Nano Technology Group (NBT), University of
Genova <http://www.unige.it/> , Genova, ITALY. 

 

Our research group has a long tradition of studying network dynamics and
plasticity in neuronal assemblies by using planar micro-electrode arrays
(MEAs). See for example the following papers: Massobrio and Martinoia, J.
Neural Eng., 2008, Pasquale, et al., Neuroscience, 2008; Chiappalone, et
al., Eur. J. Neurosci., 2008; Massobrio, et al., Neurosci. Lett., 2009;
Garofalo, et al., PLoS ONE, 2009.

 

The successful candidate will be involved in a research project focused on
the study of the computational properties of neuronal assemblies coupled to
Micro-Electrode Arrays. By using both an experimental and modeling approach,
we want to study how the cell assembly architecture and the associated
dynamic state modulate the response to external inputs of engineered in
vitro neuronal networks as a reduced experimental model of generic neuronal
cell assemblies and reproduce the experimentally observed input-output (I/O)
function in simulated neuronal networks with the aim of better understanding
the key parameters related to network connectivity (e.g. modularity,
long-range connections, excitation-inhibition balance, etc.), dynamics
(firing regime, bursting vs spiking, activity-dependent plasticity, etc.)
and the interplay between the two.

 

To reach such objectives, besides experimental activities, computational
models of large-scale neuronal networks based on integrate-and-fire neurons
should be developed.

 

Candidates must have a master degree (or equivalent) in physics,
engineering, mathematics or a related field.

Essential skills comprise Matlab and/or C++/C# programming. Experience in
computational neuroscience and/or electrophysiology is a plus.

 

Our labs are located in Genova
<http://www.turismo.comune.genova.it/spip.php?lang=en> , a small beautiful
town in northern Italy, both from historical (its historical center is the
largest of Europe) and naturalistic point of view (sea and mountains coexist
creating a unique landscape).
