A Ph.D. position in computational neuroscience and applied
mathematical modeling is available at the Georgia State University
Neuroscience Institute (http://neuroscience.gsu.edu/), in Atlanta, GA,
USA. The student will be trained in general neuroscience and will have
the opportunity to take mathematical and computational elective
courses. The earliest starting date is Summer 2011, and the stipend
will be competitive.

The student will work in diverse topics associated with "complexity"
in the life sciences, but with a focus on neural circuits such as
central pattern generators. He or she will explore the impact of
computer-assisted modeling and dynamical systems analysis on
understanding complex biophysical processes. The position is partly
funded by NSF through a grant awarded in the area of Biological
Systems Science and Engineering (BSSE) in the Emerging Models and
Technologies program
(www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward.do?AwardNumber=0829742).

The project draws on a wide set of academic backgrounds, including
mathematics, computer science, biology, neuroscience, and physics. A
successful applicant will be highly motivated and have demonstrated
interests across more than one of these academic areas, but must be
strong in applied mathematics. Previous experience in applied
mathematics research and scientific programming is desirable.
Applicants must meet the admission requirements described at
http://neuroscience.gsu.edu/1510.html and must apply through the
institute's admissions procedure. Georgia State University has a
strong commitment to computational neuroscience, and has an active
community involved in collaborative work between mathematics, physics,
computer science and neuroscience, which extends to colleagues at
Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Informal
inquiries can be sent to rclewley[AT]gsu[DOT]edu.
