The Department of Neurophysiology and Pathophysiology at the University
Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas K. Engel, is
soliciting applications for a
Postdoc position starting January 1, 2011,
with a duration of up to 4 years. The position is in an interdisciplinary
field at the intersection of theoretical and computational neuroscience,
computer science, and robotics. Applicants should have demonstrated
excellence in neuroscientific computational modeling and machine learning
methods. A strong interest in concepts and computational models of perception
and cognition is desirable. Working knowledge in models of sensorimotor
coordination, reinforcement learning, multisensory processing, a basic
understanding of information processing in the human brain, and a solid
background in data analysis methods would be required. Fluent programming
in C++ and Matlab is expected. The position requires abilities to understand
theoretical concepts and to develop corresponding computational models in
particular, and the willingness to engage in a challenging project in general.
The successful candidate will be member of the European collaborative project
“Extending Sensorimotor Contingencies to Cognition – eSMCs” starting in
January 2011. The main objective of the project is to extend Sensorimotor
Contingency Theory (SCT) as an action-based approach to perception and
awareness, and to investigate its implications in studies of natural and
artificial agents. It combines in a unique manner theoretical work,
experiments in different robots (humanoid and mobile), and studies in healthy
humans and patients. Expected outcomes are new robot control architectures
with a higher degree of robustness, adaptivity, and “human-like” behavior, as
well as new approaches for studying sensorimotor coordination in humans.
More information on the project is to appear at http://eSMCs.de. Information
on the Dept. of Neurophysiology and Pathophysiology is available at
