Several open positions for a PhD Student or Postdoc in
Computational Neuroscience, Machine Learning, and Computer Vision
Institute for Neuroinformatics, Bochum
in the group of Prof. Dr. Laurenz Wiskott
___________________________________________________________________________
Institute:
Institute for Neurocomputing
Ruhr-University Bochum
Universitaetsstr. 150
D-44801 Bochum / Germany.
The Institute for Neurocomputing is a central research institute at the
Ruhr-University Bochum, see
http://www.neuroinformatik.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/top.html. It focuses on
dynamics and learning of perception and behavior on a functional level
but is otherwise very diverse, ranging from neurophysiology and
psychophysics over computational neuroscience to technical applications.
Research group:
Prof. Dr. Laurenz Wiskott, see http://itb.biologie.hu-berlin.de/~wiskott/
Research topics:
The group of Prof. Wiskott is particularly interested in the
self-organization of visual processing. A large body of work is based on
the slowness principle for learning invariances, see
http://itb.biologie.hu-berlin.de/~wiskott/Projects/LearningInvariances.html.
Another central topic is the hippocampal system (memory formation and
navigation). One position available is specifically for modeling the
role of adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus. In addition to
biologically motivated models, the group also develops machine learning
techniques (e.g. blind source separation) and computer vision
applications (visual object recognition). Strong emphasis is put on a
good analytical understanding of the methods used.
Teaching:
Depending on the salary scale there is a teaching load of up to 4 hours
per week during the semester.
Time:
The position is available immediately. The appointment will be initially
for one year and can then be extended for several years.
Requirements:
Candidates should have an education in physics, mathematics, electrical
engineering or any related field. Required are strong mathematical and
programming skills as well as the ability to communicate and work well
in a team.
Salary:
Salary is according to salary scale TV-L E13, part time for PhD
Students, see FAQ.
Inquiries:
Informal inquiries can be addressed to Prof. Wiskott.
Application:
Complete applications should be sent to Prof. Laurenz Wiskott at the
address given above. Please send only copies and not original documents,
since the applications will not be sent back. You may also send
applications via email, but please make sure they are complete and in a
convenient format, such as a single pdf file, see the FAQ.
Ruhr-University Bochum is committed to equal opportunity in employment
and gender equality in its working environment. To increase gender
distribution in all job categories and at all levels, we strongly
encourage applications from qualified women. Female applicants will be
given preferential consideration when their level of qualification,
competence and professional achievements equals that of male candidates,
unless arguments based on the personal background of a male co-applicant
prevail. Applications from appropriately qualified handicapped persons
are also encouraged.
Deadline:
None. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled, as
will be indicated on the web page below.
